Form, texture & room to grow.

Opposite pairs of fleshy green leaves grow on gradually branching stems. As the plant matures, those stems become woody, creating the miniature-tree look associated with jade plants. Occasional red leaf margins and later starry flowers depend on conditions.

Jade plants can gradually form woody stems and a branching, miniature-tree shape. Young plants start small; older plants may produce clusters of star-shaped flowers in favorable conditions. A small nursery plant is not expected to arrive in bloom.

The everyday essentials

How to keep it growing.

01 · Find the right light

Choose a bright window indoors or a sheltered, bright outdoor spot. Introduce direct sun gradually, especially after shipping. Greenhouse-grown leaves can scorch if moved straight into strong afternoon sun.

02 · Check before watering

Check the mix below the surface before watering. When it has dried, water the root ball thoroughly and let excess water drain. Empty any saucer. Adjust to the plant and your conditions rather than watering on a fixed weekly schedule.

03 · Give roots air and drainage

Use a free-draining cactus and succulent mix in a pot with drainage holes. If the mix stays wet too long, add a suitable mineral amendment such as pumice or perlite. Repot into a container only a little larger than the roots.

04 · Adjust through the year

Check the soil more often during active growth. When growth slows in cool or lower-light conditions, water less often. Avoid leaving cold roots in wet soil, and move frost-tender plants to a protected location before freezing weather.

A small start for a branching plant. Rotate an indoor plant occasionally for balanced growth. When it is established, light pruning can encourage branching. Keep it bright and let the roots dry between waterings; slow growth in winter does not mean it needs more water.

The first few days at home.

Unpack promptly and gently remove loose packing material. Begin in bright, protected light while the plant adjusts. If soil has shifted, gently reseat the plant at its original depth. Check moisture and the condition of the roots before adding water; arrival day is not automatically watering day.

Small dry marks, older leaf tips, or spine imperfections can occur on living nursery plants. They do not become perfect again on the same tissue; later healthy growth changes the overall appearance. If you see progressive softening, a collapsed base, or another concern on arrival, take clear photos and contact us.

Pests & common growing questions.

Stretching or losing its shape?

Long gaps between leaves, a widening rosette, or pale new growth can indicate insufficient light. Improve light gradually. Old stretched growth will not compact again, so judge the response in new growth.

Soft tissue and damp soil?

Soft, yellowing leaves or a darkening stem can signal excess moisture and possible rot. Stop adding water, check drainage, and inspect the roots. Shrivelling can also occur when damaged roots cannot take up water.

Inspect before treating.

Inspect sheltered joints and the root zone for mealybugs or scale. Natural wool, pale areoles, and surface markings are not automatically pests. Isolate a suspect plant, identify the problem, and follow the label for any suitable treatment.

Old marks or an active problem?

Dry, stable surface marks differ from spreading discoloration, soft tissue, or a collapsing growing point. Check light, moisture, roots, and pests together. Keep a newly arrived plant separate while you learn its condition.

Yes, provided the spot supplies enough light and the pot drains well. Watch the new growth: pale, stretched growth generally needs more light. A grow light can help when window light is limited.

How can I grow more?

Jades can be grown from healthy stem or leaf cuttings. Stem pieces usually give a larger starting plant. Let the cut end dry before rooting in a free-draining mix, and avoid keeping an unrooted cutting constantly wet.
