Older leaves can lean teal or gray-green while fresh growth brings out lavender and pink tones. Light, season, and growing conditions influence the overall look, so a greener plant can still be the same variety.

The soft coating on the leaves is called farina, a natural waxy layer. Handle the pot rather than rubbing the leaves to help preserve that finish.

With age, the rosette can develop a short stem. Established plants may send up slender stalks of coral-pink flowers above the foliage. Blooming is a bonus, rather than something promised with a young 2-inch plant.

01Give it a bright spot

Indoors, choose a bright window or supplement with a grow light. Outdoors, begin with bright, protected light and introduce gentle sun gradually. Our plants are greenhouse grown; sudden exposure to strong afternoon sun can scorch the leaves.

02Water the soil, then let it dry

Check the mix below the surface before watering. When dry, water the root ball thoroughly, let excess water drain, and empty any saucer. Avoid a fixed weekly schedule: light, temperature, and pot size change how quickly the soil dries.

03Make drainage the priority

Use a cactus and succulent mix in a pot with drainage holes. Pumice or perlite can improve an overly moisture-retentive mix. When repotting, choose a pot only a little larger than the roots; extra wet soil is harder to manage.

04Adjust for the season

Keep it sheltered from frost and freezing temperatures. In cool, lower-light conditions, growth and water use slow down, so space waterings farther apart. A warm room does not replace the need for good light.

A widening rosette with pale, stretched new growth can indicate too little light. Improve light gradually; existing stretched growth will not shrink back into a compact rosette.

Soft leaves and damp soil?

Yellow, mushy leaves or a soft stem can signal excess moisture and possible rot. Stop adding water, check drainage, and inspect the roots. More water can make a struggling root system worse.

Cottony clumps in leaf joints?

Inspect for mealybugs and separate an affected plant from others. Cottony clusters differ from the leaf’s fine, even powdery coating. Identify the pest before choosing a treatment, and follow the product label.

A dry leaf at the base?

An occasional crisp lower leaf can be normal aging when the center is firm and healthy. Repeated leaf loss, wet tissue, or a darkening stem deserves a closer look.
